What Would Jesus Undo?
We can get so busy reading, studying, speaking boldly within our church, and just playing Christian. While doing so, children are being sex trafficked, teenagers are being enticed into drug use, homeless seniors are living in tents, crime is ruling our urban streets and I am complaining about government failure. If in truth I am the hands and the feet of my Lord, it is time to stop complaining, to ask God how and where I can help. At my age it is likely through writing. But I have great ideas for our elderly. Our medical system is so broken the elderly who do not have advocates are being swiftly ignored to death in old people warehouses. Why have we stopped honoring the elderly, stopped listening to their wisdom and experience? Spend one hour in a bad nursing home and you will ask God how you can help!
It’s an effort to keep God first, to consider every morning what He wants from us, and how we can best serve His agenda and not waste time. Distractions are an enemy, pulling us away from the call on our lives. When we focus on what He has called us to do, we will see our time and effectiveness expand.
Obedience to God’s will requires we examine our every thought and reaction. It is easy to judge and criticize. But if we do that, thinking we are somehow behaving in a Christian manner, we are the poster children for hypocrisy. When we see people in sin, we are not to judge. That is God’s job. Our job is to pray, asking God to have His will in their lives. Asking Him to bless and touch them. Our culture is rife with sin, judgement and criticism. Let us strive to be salt and light, to reach out with compassion, to turn the other cheek and lead all we can into the Body of Christ.
It is easy to err in our own favor. I often find fault in others when they are doing the thing I am trying to defeat in my own life. That’s a human failing. If we concentrate on God, if we fill and refill ourselves daily in the words and wisdom found in the Bible, we will come to understand spiritual pride is counterproductive. Spiritual pride blocks the road to a deep relationship with God!
In my time on earth, God has undone much in me. And He has yet more to undo. He has stripped away offense, criticism and judgement, He has taken rebellion, conceit and many wrong opinions. He has shown me undeserved love and given me great grace. I will always be grateful for His love.
Dearest Father, I am so grateful for the life I have led since surrendering to You. Just as I often thank You for the unanswered prayers I have prayed, I also thank You for the ‘undoing’ in my life. I thank You for pointing out my harsh feeling for the homeless. Right now, Father, I ask You to bless those people lost in the chaos and harsh conditions of these tent cities. I pray You touch people’s minds, free them from their victim status, and lead them back to productivity. Lord, I pray You touch all the addictions in the camps and release the hold those habits have on people. When I am judging, Lord, let mercy overwhelm me. When I blame people for bad choices, help me remember You invite us to live and learn and overcome. Humans make bad choices and You give us the grace to learn from those experiences. Thank You for eternal Salvation.
Wherever he went—in villages, cities, or the countryside—they brought the sick out to the marketplaces. They begged him to let the sick touch at least the fringe of his robe, and all who touched him were healed. Mark 6:56
