Savor Your God
Prayer is our pathway to relationship with God. Whether we are asking or thanking Him, loving or questioning, worshipful or praising, we need our time with Him if we want to remain close. When we reach out to Him every day we connect as His children. Can you imagine not connecting with your children or your parents for weeks on end? The bond of love would be broken through your own neglect. Touch God. Love Him. Sing and speak and relate to Him. He is the kind Father you have longed for, the loving parent your soul seeks. He chooses those who choose Him.
I was not close to my father. Because of that struggle, I tend to approach male authority in a disposition of mistrust and even anxiety. It took time for me to trust God. It took courage to address Him as Father. Only His infinite patience, His kindness and endless grace, afforded me the honor of serving and loving a Father. I invested courage and trust where I had once known only fear and distrust. God rewarded my persistence with quiet love, embracing me with a level of approval I had never known.
But God is a healer. He made me aware of my own lack of effort in that difficult relationship. I was particularly guilty of blaming my father for my hangups, my broken marriage, and my uncomfortable reactions to men. God told me to change my testimony. He said I needed to say, “I had a good father. He was not nurturing but he was funny. He did the best he could.” Once I said those words out loud, I felt like a hundred pound burden had been lifted off my shoulders. I was able to see that my father’s issues stemmed from his own difficult relationship with his mother.
What we go through and what we learn in our lifetimes is meant to teach us wisdom, help us access the Fruits of the Spirit, and enable us to mentor, teach or reach those people who struggle with similar problems. That is such a simple system. God is brilliant in that He finds fail proof ways for us to absorb His insight. He stands ready at all times, good or bad, to help us turn difficult seasons into productive growth. Those are such good reasons to treasure Him and the grace He brings into our lives.
Stay close to God. Talk to Him. Listen for His words. Tell everyone you know how good and kind and loving He is with you, and the joy He brings into your life.
Dear Lord, Thank You for loving me. Thank You for incredible grace. Thank You for forgiveness, for an eternity with You and with my Salvation. Help me, Lord, to show a reflected grace and love to the people You have placed in my life. Forgiveness and second chances lead the way to healing, growth and complete turnarounds.
New Living Translation
20 You can make this choice by loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and committing yourself firmly to him. This[a] is the key to your life. And if you love and obey the Lord, you will live long in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” Deuteronomy 30:20
