God asks us to trust Him. It seems like a simple command. But it is difficult to master! When we long to tune in to God, we need to tune out the world. It is imperative. No news! Try it for a few days. Television news is a form of torture. It is negative. Intentionally. Assaulting our senses with unpleasantness, guilt and unethical goals every hour on the hour. These broadcasts are designed to siphon God right out of our lives. Be careful every day! Filter the voices you listen to.
Media is in transition. Bad news seems to sell more papers than good news. Profit determines most policy. Journalism demanded strong checks and balances for a long time. Reporters were trained to write only the who, what, where, why and when in every story. Today, digital news happens, is photographed, written and posted with little oversight and few rules. Reporters throw in adjectives and verbs that were forbidden in legitimate press for centuries. We get a kind of “choose your own adventure” news by selecting the point of view that most closely matches our own when we select a national news source.
I try to avoid conspiracy theories. Even if there is some truth, it is an unreliable and unchecked source. Access to the Internet assures you will hear the big stories and if it is relevant, you can check it out further. It comes right back to God’s request that we trust Him. When we stay focused on Him, we avoid focusing of rumors, false stories, hyperbole, and outright lies. Human integrity is a bit like a swinging pendulum. Eventually we will agree to ignore digitalized news stories that cannot withstand close inspection. Walking with God is walking with truth.
Lord God, Help me be a good citizen. You have planted me in Your Kingdom. I am Your child. The world is in a bit of turmoil as it adapts to instant news, a volume of information too vast to evaluate, and profits that change hands swiftly. Father, I pray You can control explosive agendas and topics that are moving forward with little understanding of the cultural impact they will have on a divisive and agitated population. In short, Father God, save us from ourselves.
“The Spirit of the Lord is with me. He has anointed me to tell the Good News to the poor. He has sent me to announce forgiveness to the prisoners of sin and the restoring of sight to the blind, to forgive those who have been shattered by sin” Luke 4:18
