Compassion and empathy are in short supply these days. We have the progressives who tout themselves as the epitome of tolerance. While being completely intolerant of conservative views, Christian views, senior citizen traditions and any possible thought patterns that differ from their own. It is difficult to accept totalitarian thinking that refuses to allow another viewpoint. We have actually heard, “I don’t feel safe with your thinking.”
Telling people you are tolerant is not the same as being tolerant. Our culture thrives on this division and plays us against each other: homeless issues, addicts, gender topics, abortion, Christian, conservative, liberal and more. We view people as their beliefs versus their humanity.
I would encourage everyone to stay away from social media and the “hater culture.” If you wouldn’t say something to someone’s face in a line at the bank or grocery store, don’t say it while you’re safely wrapped in anonymity. Learn to see people through God’s loving heart! Love everyone as you love yourself. When we are angry or judgmental, we expose our life wounds and the pain they’ve inflicted. God longs to heal us. Listen to Him and allow His soothing balm to wash away our hidden scars.
Too many Christians feel justified in judging and condemning people. Scripture doesn’t say, “Love your good and perfect neighbor as yourself.” Jesus was never afraid to defend righteousness. Empathy and compassion demonstrate love. Be love.
Oh Lord God, I am sorry for the times I have allowed emotions to navigate my behavior. Please forgive me for moments I’ve reacted out of judgment and superiority. I know I cannot see other people’s hearts. I cannot know the paths they have walked or the situations that forged their beliefs. Lord, right now I pray You will touch people, You will challenge ungodly thinking and guide those back to You that are Your own. Let each of us hear and surrender to loving others as we love ourselves.
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:32
