Most Christians look forward to getting to Heaven and hearing the Lord say, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” No matter the struggles, the trials and tests, we long to run faithfully each race He called us to run. Reading the Word is a positive activity. Especially when we discover we are taking ourselves too seriously. If we read the Bible and do Bible studies daily, if we enjoy lengthy discussions and debate, we might start thinking we know more than we know. We might talk too much in a gathering. We need to listen attentively to others since they could have new thoughts and revelation.
I can feel conviction as I read the Word. However, there are times when it feels over my bed. Pray for wisdom and discernment as you study the Word. Strive to know who you are in God and remember who you are even after you get back to work, school or the family. The world is quick to throw wisdom at us, proclaiming great “truths” that become fads. The wisdom we need, the wisdom that instructs and teaches truth, is laid out for us in the Word. Do not be tricked into following the shiny opinions of the world. Stay tethered to God.
When we take our own inventory, when we reflect on patience, kindness and our progress, we can feel inadequate. But if we are repentant, sincerely striving to do better, trusting God for strength and character, we will realize maturity takes a season and growth does not happen overnight.
Lord God, I have come to You so many times in regret and repentance. I compare myself to others. I feel like I do not deserve all the love You give me. I know Your grace is a gift, and it is unmerited favor. This doesn’t begin to account for the beauty of the earth, the majesty of oceans, and the absolute splendor of snow-covered mountains. Thank You, God, for loving me when I’m at my worst. Help me see myself as You see me and remind me always to give You thanks for so much great love and Your rich blessings.
“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ Matthew 25:21
