When I am going for groceries or running errands, I often ask God to help me stay alert to the needs and hearts of the people. For obvious things, like someone shoving a chicken off by the gum because they’re afraid they won’t have enough money. Or, less evident stress like sharp voices with children, frustration with the checker and a general sense of “at the end of their rope.” I'm not certain I listen hard enough when I'm out there. Rarely do I see and accomplish my goal of fulfilling a need. It has happened. And when it does, I feel God’s love.
Sometimes I get focused on the errand, and I start trying to figure out who needs me without waiting for God. Big mistake. People are usually good at hiding true feelings and need. My goal is to be the hands and the feet of Jesus. To know without question this is a child of God who needs a hug, a touch, or simply to be seen. I want them to know Jesus took the time to send a helper just for them.
We all have a few stories of times God took our breath away, the times He just showed up because He saw we were hurting and He wanted to help. God wants us to know He sees our pain, He loves us, and He wants us to enjoy His peace and calm. Never fail to thank Him when He reaches out with a surprise touch just to remind you, He keeps your picture in His wallet. When you can, keep your eyes open for those who need a helping hand next time you go shopping.
Father, Thank You for showing me Your love for others. There s something comforting when You show me one of Your hurting children, someone who needs money, patience, or just a hug. Because if You show me that child, I am confident You will find a way to comfort me when I am in need. Help me remember I am Your representative here on the earth. May I always express Your love and goodness in the best possible ways.
Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity. Your speech must always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person. Colossians 4:5-6 (New American Standard Bible)
