Fear is a waste of time. God heals. God provides. God rescues. God loves. God spreads a net of safety wherever we go. Once we understand our position in His family, fear evaporates. Yes, we all face challenges at times. But that doesn’t mean God has abandoned us. When I was young, I read the Footsteps In the Sand poem and it changed my perspective regarding worry, abandonment, fear and other negative thinking. The poem is attributed to several authors. The most common version follows:
Footprints in the Sand
One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord
Scenes from my life flashed across the sky,
In each, I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints;
other times there was only one.
During the lowest times of my life
I could see only one set of footprints,
so I said, "Lord, you promised me,
that you would walk with me always.
Why, when I have needed you most would you leave me?"
The Lord replied, "My precious child,
I love you and would never leave you.
The times when you have seen only one set of footprints,
it was then that I carried you."
Once we accept that this is our relationship with God, we tend to be less concerned about all the world’s warnings and the scary possibilities. God is present in all things. In all times. Today and every day we know He walks beside us. We hold His hand whenever we want. To underestimate God is disrespectful. He can indeed do anything! He moves mountains. He sends the sun backward in the sky. He parted the Red Sea. Our minute life details cannot resist His power.
He is the presence we used to call conscience. He is that quiet voice that reminds us to pray when we hear sirens, when someone comes to our mind over and over, or when we start to be critical. God loves it when we pray for others. He loves obedience, answering His call, utilizing the talents He gave to us.
We live in a season when fear is on the menu every hour. The news, water cooler talk at work, people looking worried as they go about errands and the quarrels and violence caused by stress. Ignore all that. Keep your focus on God. Know He will carry you if things get too tough. Do not allow the world’s agenda to steal the peace and joy He intended us to have.
Lord God, Thank You for providing me with a measure of faith. Thank You for Your Word which is filled with Your promises, Your love and great peace. I am sorry, Lord, for the times I have listened to negative news, when I have allowed myself to tremble in fear and, even for a moment, doubt Your ever present care. Help me keep my eyes on You and know beyond any doubt You are exactly who You say You are. And though I may at times walk trough the valley of the shadow of death, let me fear no evil.
Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence.... Psalm 91
