We hear a lot about life/work balance these days. I like to pray at the beginning of each day, focusing on things God leads me to accomplish. I acknowledge an intentional life/work balance can produce stronger performances in all arenas. Work, like money, seems to be a training field for many Christians. People who overwork, even if they work for God, can burn out quickly, sacrificing families and jobs. God intends balance. He knows we need to use our talents and achieve but we also need warm family relationships, relaxation and laughter.

It seems as we grow older, we prefer to downsize, give away, and otherwise unburden ourselves from “things.” We want to work fewer hours and spend more quality time with family and friends. Life/work balance embraces downsized pleasures: recliners, pontoon boats, fishing and other retirement accessories. God is adept at providing what we need. We just need to relax and trust Him.

It takes a long time to feel good enough in your own skin to just love others into success. Don’t simply be willing to retire, look forward to it. Pray for co-workers. Make suggestions where you think they would excel. Forget jockeying for position and competition. When one person excels, we all benefit. When we sense and accept God’s love, we become our best selves. We can risk honest relationships that reflect the love we’ve learned to accept from God.

Let life flow without manipulation. Wonderful things can happen when we get out of our own way. Always train your replacement. Hold nothing back. We want them to succeed to an even higher degree than we did. Seek work/life balance and find the joy that comes from a well-lived life spent serving God.

Oh Lord! I hear and I believe. I commit to stay tuned to Your divinity and Your call on my life. Help me reject the emotions and habits that tend to hobble my world. I long to live entrenched in the fruits of the spirit! Let me stay engaged in this journey more deeply. Thank You for such challenging and delightful circumstances.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,

Colossians 3:23
