Once we accept God is in control, life gets a bit more orderly. He brings us to places that prove to be rich with His plans for our lives. We have to let go of all attempts to control our own destiny if we want to eliminate chaos. Every connection we make is an opportunity to bring salt and light to the world. It can seem small, to forgive or bless or encourage just one person, but it is the cumulative light coming from each of us that illuminates the entire world.
I have been blessed many times by the love and presence of God. When my children were teenagers and missed a curfew, I would go to Him, praying for their safety. He comforted me, covering me with a sense of peace, assuring me He had that child in His hands. At other times we would experience challenging situations at work and long for resolution. It didn’t always come right away but I would be aware God was close and I knew He was standing in the battle with me.
When we love others as we love ourselves, we bless them. When we pray only for those who will likely bless us right back, we miss the purpose. We can bless others with a smile, with a thoughtful gift or just with exhortation and encouragement. Reach beyond family. See the needs, the pain, and especially the soft desires in their hearts. Love them with a love like Christ’s.
As Christians, we are asked to trust God! Always. In every situation. The history we rely on is the story of our lives. God blesses us and rescues us and whispers “hope is here!” Looking back, we see trials, but take comfort in remembering our God was always right beside us.
The older I get, the less ‘stuff’ I want or need. It has been years since Larry and I had gifts from each other under the tree. Providing for others becomes joyful. I love the light in a child’s eyes when they see the Christmas story played out in live productions or film. I love secretly filling wish lists off giving trees. I often go out my front door asking God to make me alert to the needs of others.
We have an obligation to tell people about God’s goodness. If we are to live as true salt and light to the world, we cannot remain silent about God’s blessings in our lives. Live with joy. Radiate confidence and fearlessness. Let your example speak so loudly people will long to follow your faith. Give glory to God in everything you say and do.
Dear God, Thank You for Your calming presence. I am gloriously familiar with Your touch, Your assurance, and the sense of peace You give me when life becomes challenging. Knowing You love my children even more than I love them, knowing Your eyes are on them and Your protection surrounds them gives me joy and rest. Help me remind others how parenting with You brings feelings of comfort and trust. It is wonderful to realize You are beside us in all of life’s moments, good and bad.
Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. ... Psalm 91
