God’s love is convicting. We cannot earn it. We cannot be good enough or obedient enough to get it. He just gives it, pours it out on us and wraps us in a love so overwhelming we cannot resist Him. Everyone talks about unconditional love. Most people even think they give unconditional love to others. But unconditional love is rare. It’s the perfect example of sacrificed ego, preferring others and asking nothing in return. Unconditional love never argues. It never demands an explanation. Never wants an apology. Human love can be strong. Passionate. Even sacrificial. But it almost never rises to the level of unconditional.

God’s love teaches us the importance of repentance. He is patient as He waits on us to understand. The Word says He asks us to love Him back and He tells us to love each other exactly as we love ourselves. What does that mean? How do we love ourselves? It’s safe to say we love ourselves generously. We judge others for many of the things we do but we’re quick to justify our own reasons.

It is wonderful to try to love others with God-level love. But it isn’t possible. While we are here on earth, we are human. That means we carry human egos, pride and a “what’s in it for me” expectation. Better to accept God’s love, His grace and patience. Focusing on His example can help us do better as we love others.

Father God, Thank You for loving me in ways I could never duplicate. I learn from Your love and I do better all the time. Help me love others more generously. Help me love myself and practice forgiveness on the things I am too quick to judge. Lord, show me the times I excuse my own behavior for the things I find offensive in others. As I grow closer to You, I pray I will grow in wisdom and kindness. I pray I will grow more like You each day.

“I’m giving you a new commandment: Love each other in the same way that I have loved you. John 13:34
