Crucify Him!

Every Easter, when I read the story of Jesus’ trial, I vow I would never have joined that roaring throng. But we don’t know, do we? There is a lot of anti-Christian and anti-God rhetoric these days. The first few times I heard it I felt like I was being punked. It couldn’t be true. I grew up in a Christian nation. My Great Grandmother prayed over me every time she saw me. Everyone I knew said prayers and believed in God. God’s name was written on our money!

What happened? Today’s strident voices are tough to hear. God is openly mocked. Jesus didn’t get gender right! Crucify Him! The Ten Commandments are Patriarchal. Crucify Him! The Bible is homophobic. Crucify Him! I read where a famous singer hated an actor’s politics, so she suggested we silence him. Silence him? How far will she go? What does that mean?

In the America where I grew up, we didn’t try to get the people we disagree with knocked off. We had a live and let live philosophy that eventually people would wake up. Or they wouldn’t. We tried to live by the golden rule and the ten commandments. We respected police officers, teachers, and those who made the laws. We loved the American flag. It has stood for our heritage and blessings almost 250 years. Politics are temporary. Every Kindergartner can tell you, ‘You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit.’ Sadly, by the time some of those children get to college they will need safe words and a pacifier to make it to lunch. We now have people who believe they have the right to rule over other people’s opinions. They are offended and they don’t feel safe. Grow up!

Dear God, please help America. Help our world. In the name of love and tolerance, decent people are doing terrible things. They are holding people hostage in tents, deprived of medical care and safety, in the name of their personal freedoms. There are no longer protected places for the criminally insane. Victims have few rights and suffer enormous losses, including many lives. Any nation that hopes to endure has got to have rules, laws and order. Please Lord God, help America navigate these rough waters and find a path back to peace. May our borders be safe and those who cross them legally be blessed. Help us be civilized again.

So on the outside you look as though you have God’s approval, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. Matthew 23:28
