Jesus is the Light of the world. It is our call to reflect Him and to live as examples of the lessons He taught. There is always a temptation, when we are gifted to write or speak in the spirit, to begin to believe we are the light instead of the reflection.
When we lose ourselves in Jesus’ wisdom and His profound words, we are at our most teachable moments. Think about the things we remember the clearest. Jesus standing with the woman caught in adultery. As she stood in fear and shame, eyes closed, all her accusers walked away. Perhaps ONLY Jesus would have said, “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”
He called Lazarus forth from the grave. He used spit to heal a man’s blind eyes. Time after time, He was so human and yet so divine. “Come and walk on the water with Me,” He said to Peter. He blessed one thief who shared crucifixion with Him and promised they would walk in Paradise together that very day. He helped them with both spiritual lives and their physical lives, understanding both were vital in God’s design. Performance for God is pointless. What He wants, what He asks us to do, is to hear His voice, to follow His leading and live for His Kingdom. When we answer that call, God explodes our opportunities, our reach and our results. In Him, we shine.
In all this teaching we learn it is easier to shove a camel through the eye of a needle than it is to get a rich man into heaven. That can leave a struggling Christian with the feeling there is no way on earth we can make it into heaven. And then God says all we have to do is believe in Jesus! 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
In Ecclesiastes, Solomon’s wisdom concludes with the realization that loving and serving God is the only lasting and satisfying goal under the sun. All his homes, wives, palaces, temples, servants and fame came to naught. He still felt empty without God.
The suffering of Jesus, all for us and to forgive our sins, is the example we should follow. Faith that defies fear. Grace that obliterates judgement. Love that overcomes everything. Some days the path to God feels hopelessly far and unreachable. And that is why God equipped us with a measure of faith.
Lord, I am grateful for Your love. The Word can be confusing at times. Help me understand it more every day. Sometimes I know a passage is not for me on that particular day. Other days it is clearly for me and I read it with a grateful heart. You provided us with a life manual that fits everyone’s needs at the exact time they need it. And it speaks that truth for our entire lives. Help me to stay focused on each lesson as it is presented, knowing Your timing is perfect.
But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. James 3:17
