When we face true emergencies, who do we want in our corner? Who do we share with? Who do we ask to pray? Recently, someone I know went through a scary health issue. Sudden. Unexpected. Frankly the kind of thing our daily prayers hold at bay. So much so, we might feel God’s favor is wrapped around us as we dwell in our little prayer bubbles. Even though we admit we can face all the troubles the world faces. There was a lot of secrecy in this emergency my friend experienced. Who could know? Who wasn’t to know? I felt confused.
My question is a simple one: whose prayers have no influence with God? Who would I choose to not support me? I ended up deciding I wanted all the prayers, from the newest (most giddy, sold-out, brand new Christian) to the most gloomy (where did the joy go?) Elder at my church. Seasons come and go and we all grow in unique ways as we pass through them. I can remember exploding with zealous fire when I first heard the phrase “Unction to Function.” I heard from God often. And since I was new to His family, I never doubted His was the voice I heard. I guess if I needed effective passionate prayer, I would choose the newly born again. Everything is miraculous. When I put on the Armor of God or walked in the Valley of the Shadow of Death, they were so real I could touch them.
That is just me and it reflects the relationship I have with God. Our friendship is as real as any friendship in my life. He has a huge family of children and if He offers me their prayers when I am in trouble, I accept each one. I will openly seek everyone’s love, everyone’s touch with God, and everyone’s generous time as they beseech God on my behalf.
Lord Jesus, I am so grateful for the Body of Christ. I am grateful You have established a loving family that will one day share that Heavenly feast. I accept their weaknesses as they learn to follow You more closely every day. I treasure their enthusiasm and passion and innocence as they pray. Let every prayer these faithful souls pray fly swiftly to God’s ears.
So admit your sins to each other, and pray for each other so that you will be healed. Prayers offered by those who have God’s approval are effective. James 5:16
