When people have been walking with God, reading the Word, carefully trying to follow Jesus’ footsteps, they might eventually experience a heavy feeling. That is the moment they realize they’ve picked up the habit of orchestrating their own pathway again. They’re struggling under the burden of rebellion. Or doubt. Dutifully, they lay down ego again. And again. Eventually they surrender, grab God’s hand and let Him lead. Finally, they feel the freedom of His direction, His love, and His willingness to guide all decisions as He leads them in the path of righteousness.
Many times, I have pondered the decisions my husband and I made on our own. We know we should pray regarding big choices. Yet somehow in our early walk with the Lord, we adopted an attitude that God wanted us to pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps. Make a decision. Stick to it. Don’t use God like a rabbit’s foot. We forged ahead and made difficult choices regarding home purchases, moves, car buying, jobs and schooling. It’s possible to go too far when relying on God to make family decisions. Some people pray over every decision. The big choices as well as brand choice for peanut butter.
God wants to make our lives easier. After many years as a Christian, I think it’s a great idea to pray over all major life decisions. I’ve heard a lot of miracle stories of people saved from buying a home that was about to be in an eminent domain situation. Or a car purchase that would have cost thousands in future repairs. God wants to help us avoid losing money to thieves.
Lord God, I thank You for Your wisdom and Your warnings. When I understand I have Your ear and Your attention, I am humbled. You want to help. You want to give advice. I repent for the many times I thought I knew enough to decide things on my own. Most decisions I made without submitting to Your wisdom did not work out. Help me to run to You for advice.
God’s favor has been given to each of us. It was measured out to us by Christ who gave it. Ephesians 4:7
