Taking a risk willingly, trusting God to have your back, is faith working in your life. All the promises of God should bolster us without question. But we live in the world where gravity, natural disasters, and wickedness are things we know to be true. We love God. We trust Him. But sometimes our logic and experience cause us to question God. When that happens, those things we’ve experienced as truth seem more real. How God’s heart must surge with joy when people trust Him more than the reality they know.
We definitely trust gravity. When we first learned to walk there were a lot of falls and no one had to explain the consequences to us. We see blue skies, green grass, blue oceans where the sun disappears at the end of each day. We trust science because we see its power on display. Spiritual power, the majesty of God, is more difficult. We are asked to believe in a generous and loving Father we cannot see. We have expressions like, “Seeing is believing.” We are conditioned to true things and faith things. Developing steadfast faith makes life more smooth.
Lord God, I come to You asking for steadfast faith. I know You have not given us a spirit of fear and I know Your touch, Your voice and the gentle warmth I feel when You are near. But when the rains are falling and I can see the water rise, when troubles threaten my peace and I am challenged on all sides, the storm rages. I see its power and that power appears more real than Yours. I am so sorry I allow doubt to enter my faith, sorry I listen to negative voices, to the laughter and mocking meant to cause my faith to fail. You are my loving Father and I adore You. Thank you for rescuing me when I start to falter, for holding my hand until I find my way again.
“You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.” Matthew 17:20
