I have often heard that working for God, using your gifts and talent in the church, is simply reasonable service. I feel the struggle to do enough, be enough, perform enough. And all the while God is holding out His arms to me, telling me He loves me and I am chosen. In those times, I can be stubborn, thinking I must do more. When will I rest in joy? Knowing He loves me as I am.
Yes, we are born with a purpose, a place within God’s plan, but we are free to choose to follow that purpose or to refuse it. Usually, we enjoy the work we were designed to do. In fact, at times we can barely resist operating in our gift whether we are hooked up with a church or not. Which likely means many a secular business or organization has benefitted from the gifts God gave us.
The lesson here is to accept ourselves with the same grace God accepts us. He loves us whether we follow His plan or not. He does not want us living in guilt. He feels no joy when we over commit, exhaust ourselves, or simply serve Him robotically, whether or not we’re using the talent He gave us. Far better to move more slowly, develop our gifts, and serve effectively and powerfully.
Oh Lord God, here I am again, repenting for my lack of performance. I know where I am called. I know how You gifted me to serve. Help me to accept myself with the same love You have shown me, the same kindness that says You love me no matter how much I serve You. I pray I will enhance the talent You placed in me, I will educate and build it to a point where it blesses the Kingdom of God, and I will accomplish the things You ask me to do without exhaustion and burnout. Thank You, God, for mercy and approval.
Nothing Can Separate Us from God’s Love
