Did you know very few people turn down an offer for prayer? What do people ask for when someone offers to pray for them? A lot.
This website started as a worldwide mail campaign in 1996. My name is Beverly Vines-Haines. I attended a Christian City Reaching Conference in San Jose, CA that year. I had a new computer. In those days, computers often came equipped with a pile of Software CDs. In my case, there was a world atlas. The idea of offering to pray for people all over the world intrigued me.
I decided to write to every city in my new atlas, offering to pray for people’s specific needs. The results were remarkable. I heard from the Vatican, from well-known pastors around the world, and from almost every country on the planet. A person in Latvia asked for a piece of wood so they could be warm one more time before they died. People asked for churches to reopen their doors. For health. For healing from AIDS. Asylum. The needs were deeply personal, transparent, and often desperate.
Hundreds of people responded to the prayer offer over a period of two years. It became burdensome in the sense that many letters arrived in varied languages. Eventually, I understood God speaks all languages, so I stopped seeking translation or any idea that I was personally responsible for the results.
When the project began, international stamps were .26 cents. Today, that same stamp is $1.70. That makes sending 1000s of unsolicited letters prohibitive.
Where did I send these letters? I took a cue from the US Post Office, where there is almost always a bulletin board with local notices, wanted posters, and general information. So if a city were in Jinzhou, China, I would send my letter to the Postmaster, Jinzhou, China. On rare occasion a letter would be returned, so I would resend it to the town’s local high school.
No one was any more surprised than I was at the response. So many countries and cities were represented. Since the initial project ended, I have wanted to do this prayer offer digitally.
I decided to combine the prayer offer and a devotional. Really good devotionals are hard to find. Finding one where specific prayer is offered is even more rare.
It always felt as if God’s hand was on the first version, and this version seems less wieldy and less time-consuming. Each day is designed to stand alone. However, occasionally a topic will spill over into a second or third day. Please enjoy this daily Devotional. Once again, it will be read and shared all over the world, mingling the prayers of the faithful, wherever they dwell.”
Thanks, Bev
