Do What You Say You Will Do

Your Word is Your Bond

Faithfulness is the next Fruit of the Spirit.  We love the images that come to mind when we consider these qualities. They are the assets we look for in people we work with, worship alongside, and seek as friends.  Faithfulness is what draws us to that steadfast friend who always keeps their word, is prompt, generous, and can be counted on to always do exactly what they say they will do.

We don’t have many friends we can call in the middle of the night, when we’re stranded on the side of a road, a friend we can ask to come and rescue us because the kids are asleep in the car, we can’t get a tow, and we’re out of options.  In each of my friend and family groups there is usually just one person who is that sacrificial. Need help packing boxes, cleaning a barn, or building a fence?  That’s the friend who shows up with a few buddies and stays until the job is finished.

How about the people who are prayer warriors for us?  When we have a crisis in life, or an emergency, and we ask people to pray, we know a few who will storm Heaven for hours if they agree to do it.  Faithfulness compels them to keep their word.  I always say Yes to those requests and must confess unless I put it on my prayer list it might get overlooked.  I even have a generic prayer for anyone I may have forgotten, believing God is already on it.

The Fruits of the Spirit are worth the effort to develop, build on and practice until they become second nature. When we talk about life goals and stepping up for the Kingdom of God, we can never go wrong if we diligently seek these qualities.  And while each quality adds to our character, faithfulness benefits others and therefore becomes a powerful tool in Kingdom living.

Lord God, Help me in my efforts to develop strong Fruits of the Spirit in my life.  May I live in love, loving my neighbor as I love myself.  May I always find joy, live in joy and bring joy to my family and those around me.  I surrender to peace and patience, goodness and kindness, and the beautiful generosity of faithfulness. Thank You, Lord, that You designed the Heavenly culture to operate in love and support, generosity and sacrifice.

I have not kept the good news of your justice hidden in my heart; I have talked about your faithfulness and saving power. I have told everyone in the great assembly of your unfailing love and faithfulness.  Psalm 40:10
