Peace that Passes Understanding
The third Fruit of the Spirit is Peace. Just reading that word brings comfort. Love lines us up with the Word of God. Joy brings hope and laughter to every situation. Peace pampers us. It’s that feeing at the end of a long day where we sit in a recliner or even at a campfire and we thank God for peaceful lives. No warring or quarreling. We can lose ourselves in God’s goodness. Music. Assured He holds us safe.
How do we justify asking for these things? Because God has made us so many promises. Romans 9:4 says, “They are the people of Israel, chosen to be God’s adopted children. God revealed his glory to them. He made covenants with them and gave them his law. He gave them the privilege of worshiping him and receiving his wonderful promises.” Obviously, we do not (or should not) pray blessings only for ourselves and our families. Pray for a hurting world. Pray for those who are living with war. Pray for the sick. For the dying. Pray for the homeless and the hungry. Pray for God’s will in America. Pray for revival.
What happened in the Ukraine affected my prayer life greatly. It seemed one day the people were living stress free lives and the next they were running for their lives. Carrying babies, leaving husbands to stand against this sudden peril. Now I pray for peace. For all of us. I ask God to protect my family from war, bombs, explosions. It seems a good thing to ask Him for peace.
We can be peaceful, never inserting drama or trauma into social situations or work life. Peace is more an atmosphere around us but we certainly contribute to the equation. There is an effort by media, and social media, and even legitimate press, to stir up emotions. Its called rage bait. While most of us are not able to think harmful thoughts toward others, there are people motivated by war profits, financial gain, and political position who willingly want America’s freedoms abolished.
Choose peace. Pray. Ask God to surround you with peace, with quiet, with His beauty and with His favor. We are the children of God. He invited us to follow Him. He promised protection and favor. His Angel Army stands ready to ride to our aid.
Lord, I thank You that You made promises and I am encouraged to remind You what You’ve said. I will shelter under Your wings. I will delight in Your might and majesty. I am right where I am supposed to be when I run to You. Thank You Father for peace.
Let me live forever in your sanctuary, safe beneath the shelter of your wings! Psalm 61:4
