My Brother’s Keeper
Sometimes when we are overwhelmed, we become distracted. At those times we do not necessarily tune into God’s love and concern. It is a good time to focus on others, seeing what they need and helping in any way we can. Pray for those who are lonely, needy, troubled or just need to feel seen. Ask God what He wants. Life without His light must be terrifying.
God never leaves us. No matter what. No matter who. He is with us in joy and He is with us in sorrow. He is with us in prosperity and He is with us in need. The whole of our existence is our God, our Provider and the source of our life’s meaning. God’s promises are Yes and Amen. We cannot surrender to fear which is meant to paralyze us and keep us from the very things God has called us to do.
I have noticed that when I am focused on others, I am often listening intently for God’s leading. Other people are the lifeline God throws to us when we get too self-focused. Ask people to go to lunch. Invite another couple to come for dinner. Give small gifts. Little surprises delight. If you write, give them a story or poem. If you garden, pick a bouquet or some vegetables. Lately because we are planning to move soon, I’ve been seeing things around my house that remind me of what different friends like or need. I set those things aside for them. Would much rather bless them than run a garage sale.
It is easy to be a Christian when everything is going smoothly in life and blessings are abundant. It is when the storms come that we can run from God and turn to ourselves for the answers. Stop. Turn around. God is waiting for our return.
Whatever the future holds, we are God’s children. We have a purpose and a call. He will push, prod and bring us straight through doubt, confusion and fear. And once He walks us through, He will help us achieve everything He planned for us to do before we were born.
Lord God, Thank You for teaching me to care for others. I love Your design that when we help other people, You are able to bless us. Help me give grace and attention to those You direct or lead me to. I feel Your grace. I am Saved by the sacrifice of Jesus. Your Word leads me to wisdom, the Holy Spirit whispers Your love, and the time Jesus spent on earth, healing and teaching, echoes across all time.
The Lord is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. Psalm 103:8
