In the beginning, the walk with God seems easy. Almost euphoric. We hear the story of creation. We read about the prophets. The birth of Jesus. We study the Word and read about the many miracles. It’s a season of love and foundations. Eventually, because we need to mature, we experience challenges. We hear people mock and laugh at Christians, calling us superstitious and foolish. Even though we ignore them, we fight questions and doubts. Then, the hard stuff. Our fortunes reverse, our friends walk away. We lose a job or a loved one. Panic sets in. Where did the gracious and generous Jesus go? This is where the rubber meets the road. It’s important we have maturity at this point.
This is when we can see Jesus move in a mighty way. Sure, we have to endure testing. But we were born to pass these and even greater tests. We were born into the Body of Christ. Imagine if we never had to go through trials? We would not understand or be able to help others as they faced trouble. Christians rely on many promises from God. But He never promised us we would live trouble free lives. He promised to walk beside us, to be with us through all seasons.
Father God, I am so grateful for Your tender mercies. While I might want season after season of gifts and candy, You know I won’t be much use to Your Kingdom if I don’t mature into a warrior of merit. Thank You for setting challenges in front of me, for testing my ability to stand strong in fierce winds and to train my character to dig deep into Your wisdom. Help me train until You send me out into the world to act as Your hands and feet to all the lost and weary people longing to find You.
4 ”Trust in the Lord with all your heart. And do not lean on your own understanding. Proverbs 4:5
