Fear sets a predictable series of events in motion. We begin to think we have to control everything. To be safe. To survive. We stop trusting God with our lives and put ourselves in charge of even the smallest details. We lose sleep. We overthink. Peace flees. No one can control everything. But we try. God watches. He waits. While we struggle, He thunders through the universe just as He did in the times when Jesus walked the earth. He cares. He always keeps His word. Trust Him and just let go. Once He has touched our souls, once we are His, we need to follow where He leads.
The world’s philosophy is a take charge, climb to the top, never give up an inch of control mandate. God is different. He walks beside us. He equips and prepares us for a life of fulfillment and purpose. Daily prayer, intentional listening and obedience keep us focused on our call and on our mission in life. It is always a temptation to grab control back from God. Things move too slowly. We can decide He has forgotten us and we need to save ourselves. During 40 years in the dessert, the Israelites gave up on God repeatedly. When obstacles arise, we panic, thinking He has led us onto the wrong path. Our view of the future is limited compared to God’s view. He sees around corners. He sees next year and ten years after that. Life has endless details and choices. One of the best choices we can make is to surrender fear and allow God to make us shine.
God, please help me develop patience. Let me always see Your loving heart and Your endless promises. When I take control, God, I get lost in the details. I no longer see Your strength and power. I begin to believe the world, the wars, the trouble and the threats have far more authority than they do. You are my world, God. When I rely on You, when I put my trust in You, I function at my best. Lord God, let me live my life as a peacemaker, as a person walking in the fruits of the Spirit and please let my influence bless the world. When I leave this world, God, I pray it will be better because I’ve listened to You and walked where You have led.
In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 1:5-8
